Assignment Four
Teen Obesity
We as Americans tend to have this idea that being overweight as a child or a teen is no big deal. We ignore the problem by stating, he or she will grow out of being overweight as they get older. This is not always the case. The fact is, a percentage of children and teenagers on the United States are obese and many in the percentile will become overweight or obese in adulthood. The importance of having a healthy body should be taught to children at an early age. Over 16 percent of children and teens in the United Sates are obese and more than 30 percent are overweight.
Obesity is an excessive accumulation of body fat, which results in individuals being at least “20 percent heavier than their ideal body weight” (Haakonson p.1). Obesity is usually cased by an individual’s eating more food than is necessary for him or her. Obesity is growing problem among children and teens. It is a common eating disorder associated with adolescence, being overweight or obese can weaken physical health and well being as well as shorten life expectancy. Children are more likely to be involved in bullying other normal weight children or in more cases than others, may become the individual that is being bullied.
In the 1980’s the obesity rate was lower than 6 percent. On the following page is a graph of overweight children now compare to then. This is due to more physical activity in children. I can remember waking up on Saturday mornings to the sound of kids playing outside. This usually took place at about 7a.m. Kids in my generation were usually outside playing before eating breakfast and play would go on all day until being called inside by a parent. Today the neighborhood streets are damn near empty all day. It is very rare now to see children at play on a Saturday morning and we owe this is due to the discovery of cable, video games, computer, cd players and television. The average American child spends several hours each day watching television; these are hours that could be used for physical activity.
Health risks associated with being over weight are high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease etc. to name a few. These health problems will usually follows the child into adulthood if the problem is fixed. “In the past few years, Type 2 diabetes has risen dramatically among children and adolescents” (Kendall p. 1). Experts believe this increase is due to the high rate of overweight and obesity. Social and psychological consequences are evident. Children or teens tend to become with drawn from society, many will become friends with other individuals that look like themselves, and isolate themselves from others. This can lead to self esteem and identity problems.
The cause of obesity different from person to person, they include genetic, and the environment (restaurants, convenient stores, movie theaters etc.). Children with obese parents are more likely to be obese. “Over-nutrition has replaced under-nutrition as the largest nutrition-related problem facing both children and adults” (Kendall p.2). Although the percent of calories from total fat have declined over the years, the total amount of calories has increased. Meaning, that even though some foods may not contain a lot of fat, it still may be high in calories. Many of today’s children are usually part of a two parent working household, meals sometimes consists of something quick and high in calories.
An important part of treating obesity among children and teens is for parents and healthcare professionals to be sensitive and focus on the positive. Children should not feel threaten to do something about his or her weight, instead it should be encouraged. Involvement of the entire family should be the focus point; weight programs that involve the entire family have shown improvement in long term effectiveness. “The U.S. Surgeon General recommends moderate physical activity for children everyday for at least 60 minutes” (Marunde Muscle p.2). Today children are not getting enough physical activity and in many cases they are not being encouraged to do so. A lot of children think sitting in front of the television for hours eating chips and drinking soda is normal, this is because they have no one to tell them different.
I have a friend who taught physical education at a middle school in Tucson Arizona, I asked if all of her students took part in the class. The response was, class participation was the number one rule of the class. She not only encouraged all of her students of participate, but her, herself took part in the mile run every Friday. Those who were not able to run the whole distance was encouraged to complete the run the best way they could even if it meant walking. My friend always the last to cross the finish line this is because, she wanted to make sure everyone in the class finished the race, size did no matter. My proposal is for parents, physical education teachers, and other child care providers to get children and or teens involved in some kind of physical activity. Kids follow by example, they figure it mom or no one else in the family is not eating correctly or engaging in something physical why should they.
All physical education teachers primary goal should be to teach all students the importance of maintaining a healthy body, and stress the importance of eating healthy as well, the importance of physical activity even if it is just going out for a walk. Families should take time out on the weekends, even if it is just for an hour and do something together, like place basketball, kickball, or just find out what it is that your child likes to do and let him or her decide on the activity. If children are taught that there is more to life than video games, television, music, etc... I guarantee that the children of tomorrow will be a much healthier and happier bunch.
Hey Professor Jolly,
I post my visual argument, but was unable to add my pictures along with it, do not know how to do so. I sat for about an hour trying to figure it out. I am not sure I will able to do my presentation in front of the class. Nervous, very nervous.

Maya Angelo

Maya Angelou’s birth name is Marguerite Annie Johnson, born in St. Louis, Missouri, her parents divorced when she was three. Maya and her brother were then sent to live with their grandmother in the small town of Stamps, Arkansas. Maya Anelou experienced racial discrimination as a young girl and at the age of seven was sexually molested by her mother’s boy friend. Maya only spoke of this incident with her brother, and later heard that her uncle killed her attacker. She felt that her”words had killed the man” (Biography p. 11). After that, Maya Angelou did not speak for five years.
At the of 13, she begin to speak once more and attended Mission High School and won a scholarship to study dance and drama at San Francisco’s Labor School, where she dropped out while still in her teens. Maya later went back to school but became pregnant in her senior year and graduated a few weeks before giving birth to her son Guy. At the age of 29, Maya Angelou married and began her career as a night club singer, where she changed her name to Maya Angelou.
Maya Angelou’s big break came with her book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”.
This book goes in dept describing the writer’s childhood. The book was published in 1970 and became a big success, and Maya became a “national figure” (achievements p. 3). Her lists of published materials includes more that 30 titles, which includes “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die (1979), Gather Together in My Name (1974), Singing ‘and Swingin’ and Gettin Merry Like Christmas (1976), The Heart of a Woman (1981)” (Biography p. 1).
Maya Angelou is also known for her many writings of poems. A poem that I found inspirational is Phenomenal Woman. This particular poem was written for women of all shapes, sizes, colors. In this poem there is appreciation, acceptance and celebration of who we are, what we do, and it gives one a since of acknowledging just as we are. Phenomenal Woman is a poem that is an anthem for the strength of women.
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them, They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me (Angelou p. 121).
This poem continues but, I did not want to write down all of the words. You can read this poem as well as others in Maya’s book “Maya Angelou Poems”.
The interior standard for beauty and self worth extends way back. “Phenomenology of the body makes a nice philosophical dove tail with this kind of poetic sentiment, while cataloging her strengths by separate phenomena, Angelou cannot resist making clever use of another meaning of the word, phenomena – outstanding, excellent and strutting just a bit of her power over the fellows” (Annotation p. 1).
My attempt was to illustrate pros and cons of Maya Angelou’s poem Phenomenal Woman. I was unsuccessful in finding any negative remarks about the poem, so I will concentrate on the positive. Maya Angelou’s poem Phenomenal Woman, have touched so many women. In an Editorial Review, a woman wrote, “Phenomenal Woman is a phenomenal poem that speaks to us of where we are as women at the dawn of a new century. Here is a poem that radiates wisdom, and conviction, renewing our belief in the glory and tender mercies of our gender” (Amazon.com p. 1). In another review, a reader writes “This piece brings tears to the eyes. I have often wondered what made my mother and grandmother goes gracious, forgiving and tolerant of lesser women... and now I know” (Analysis p.2).
Awards for which Maya Angelou has been nominated for are the National Book Award for “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, the Pulitzer Prize, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award, as well as receiving the Presidential Medal of Arts Award in 2000” (awards p.1).
Although many of Maya Angelou’s works are written for and from an African Americans point of perspective on life, any person reading her works can come away with some special meaning for themselves. This is a woman who truly has remarkable talent and hopefully one day I will have the opportunity to meet her.
Teen Obesity: Annotated Bibliography
Childhood Obesity: Health Risks, Diagnosis and Treatment Boston,
2004. http//www.marude-muscle.com/childhoodobesity.html
In this article there are signs given that may help one determine if a child has or is at risk for childhood obesity. Health risks in childhood obesity stem form asthma to hypertension. There are a total of three sections in the article in relation to childhood obesity, they are health risks as stated earlier, which can lead to high blood pressure, and heart disease to name a couple. The next section deals with diagnosis. In this chapter the child is measured by body fat to determine if in deed the child is over weight. This is a good book to read, and is very readable.
Crawford, Jeanne and Delany, Anna “Overweight Teens And Kids:
Advice For Parents, Family Health Network, New York, 2007.
http://www.calorieking.com/library/articles/overweight.Teens
and-kids-Advice-for-parents…
The authors explain that there are over 16 percent of children and teens in the United States that are obese. Computers, videogames, and television have played a part in the problem explained the authors. Although this may be a reliable source it do not offer much information that may be useful for my final paper, but none the less is a good source for reading. There are good points that are made in the article, those are the ones listed above. The article I found was too short and did not offer the information that I was looking for.
C. Frank. “Obesity-The Simple Cause of It” Ezine Articles, 26 March
2007. 04 April 2007. Simple-Cause-Of-It&id=503581>.
In this article the writer suggest that being overweight is one of choice and not of genetics. He explains making poor food choices is not just about fast food; it is about all the food someone choose to put in their bodies. This article is not only too short, but I consider it not to be a reliable source, because it sounds as if the writer is only giving his oppion on he subject of being overweight. There is no data offered, or proof to back his claim. The writer is a journalist and his no expertise on the subject of obesity. This would not be a source that I would use in my final paper.
Flower-Brown, Angel M.D., M.P.H. “Preventing And Treatment Of
Overweight In Children And Adolescents” 1 June, 2004. American
Family Physician. http://www.aafp.org/afp/2004061/2591.html
Angela Brown writes that there are two levels that classify overweight in this section.
The first is having a body mass index from the 85th through the 95th percentiles for age and sex. I will attempt to give a visual of the percentiles on a chart that will be part of the final paper. The other is being overweight, which corresponds to a body mass greater than the 95 percentile for age and weight. Angela Brown believes, overweight in childhood and adolescence is an important public health issue because of the rapidly increasing and associated adverse medical and social consequences. Prevention should start with family and schools and exercise is strongly encouraged. This is a very good source to read and is readable as well. The writer is an expert in the field and the article is in a popular magazine.
Green, Alan. M.D. FAAP. “Childhood Obesity.” 05 June, 1996. //www.dregreene.com/21_179.html>
In this article the writer offers valuable information on child obesity. He defines what obesity is and how it is caused. It is not solely caused by genetics, even though genetics may play a part in some cases. He explains it is cause by the lack of healthy nutrients. Alan Green explains how difficult it is to treat obesity and why, and offer information on how to approach the problem of childhood obesity. This can be done by getting the whole family involved in eating healthier and doing some type of physical activity. This is a good source because it is reliable since the author is an M.D. The only criticism I have with this article is that it lacks statistics.
Hartwell, Eric. “Long Term Health Risks Of Childhood Obesity” Ezine
Articles 18 February, 2004. http://ezinearticles.com/?Long-Term-
Health-Risks-of-Childhood-Obesity&id=459420
Childhood obesity can cause numerous physical health problems. One of the biggest concerns in recent years has been the rising number of children affected with type 2 diabetes, a disease that previously mainly afflicted adults as explained in the article. People who are overweight are at risk for contacting severe chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, liver disease or high cholesterol to name a few.
The writer also states, there are emotional and psychological effects on obese children that are often carried into adulthood. They are less likely to pursue higher education or to get married into adulthood. This is a good source that I am planning on using; it has large range of information and is in a scholarly magazine. It is a good magazine to read and is readable to us normal everyday folks.
Innelli, Vincent M.D. “Preventing Childhood Obesity Recommen-
Dation” New York, 28 October, 2004. http://pediatrics.about.com
/cs/nutrition/a/childhd_obesity.html.
Vincent Innelli has a private pediatric practice in Dallas; he is an associate professor of Pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. In this article the author suggests working with schools to decrease the availability of foods and drinks with little nutritional value and to decrease vending machines, as well as snack bars. This will be a healthy start in getting our use to eating the foods they should be eating instead of junk foods. This is a good and reliable source, but lacks some information that I was hoping to find. I wanted to know how children are affected health wise, none the less it is still readable material.
“Focus On Childhood Obesity” Institute of Medicine, Washington,
2007. http://www.iom.edu/CMS/22593.aspx
In this article it is explained that the percentage of obesity is greater in girls than that in boys. Obese children have a greater risk of becoming diabetes at some time in their lives. There is a section in the article on understanding the cause of obesity. It is here that the writer tells its readers that the cause may not indeed is genetics. It states, prevention involves a focus on calories, and lack of physical activity. This magazine is a reliable source that I plan to use in the final paper. In know it is reliable because of the magazine the article is in.
Kendall, P., Serrano, E. and Wilken, K. “Childhood Obesity” Updated
23 June, 2006. http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pobs/foodut/09317
.html.
In this article there is a section on the effects of obesity that gives information on high cholesterol, blood pressure that can be followed from childhood to adulthood. There is a section on causes, which explains that obesity can be genetics. It the parent is obese there is chance that the child may become obese or have some type of weight problem. Lastly there is a section on treatment and offer solutions to the problem. Treatment should begin early and should involve the family as a whole. Healthy eating should be enforced, and monitor portion sizes as well as reduce the fats, sugars, and encourage some type of physical activity. I am not sure if I would consider this as a reliable source, because I am not familiar with the magazine itself, however there is good information in the article.
Haakonson, Harvey. Dr. “Slow Carb For Life” New York, 21 March
2005.
This source offer useful information on teen obesity. It offers an overview of how big the problem of obesity is in teens and or children. Statistics are given, suggestions on solving or changing eating habits are given as well. The writer suggests parents use less sugars and fats in food, try to gather up a good physical activity plan for the whole family, and to set an example for the child. The author feels that children will follow by example. There were many chapters in this book, but only one had something to do with my topic.

Rationale for asignment three

Rationale
After deciding on a topic the second thing I wanted to know was, just how serious the problem of obesity was and what could I so as a parent in protecting my child from becoming overweight. I did research on the internet as well as go to the public library to find further information on the subject of teen obesity. The research conducted turned out to be very helpful in writing the annotated bibliography. Such articles were, “Health Risks, Diagnosis and Treatment, Over Weight Teens and Kids; Advice For Parents, and Preventing And Treatment of Over Weight In Children. My search stems from what causes obesity, what an individual could do to correct or solve the problem of obesity. I found many articles on prevention of obesity, includes observing food portions of those who are over weight, physical activity is also encouraged, as well as parents getting involved in the food program in the public schools.
Problems I had with the research were that there was not as much information available at the library as there were on the internet and data bases. None the less the information obtained was truly helpful to my paper. The other problem I encountered was finding information on encouraging students in the participation of physical education. I wanted to know what part do the teachers play in encouraging children to participate and how many over weight children participate in physical activity? I came to a conclusion that I would not be able to have these questions answered by looking on the internet or going to the library. Fortunately I know a person who is a physical education teacher at a middle school, and she able to give some in sight to the questions I wanted answered. These questions will be introduced in the final paper.
My plan is to organize the bibliography by order of importance. First I will attempt to give the definition of obesity, what causes it, the health problems associated with being over weight lastly, the prevention of obesity. If this does not go according to plan the organization will be placed in the final paper. Based on the research conducted, I’ve come to the conclusion, that obesity and being over weight is a serious problem in the United States amongst teens and children. The main cause is due to the lack of healthy nutrition. I have also learned that steps are being taken to solve the problem in schools. Getting children to participate in physical activity early, starting in grade school and taking out the soda machines, serving healthier breakfast and lunches as well as snacks are well on there way in being introduced in the

Start of annotated bibliography

I have decided on the topic of childhood obesity. I have gotten a pretty good idea as to what type of information I want to address. There is a lot of information available for this assignment, I just have to apply myself. I have begun to search the web site for books and other information in relation to my topic.

Essay Three

I am a little concerned about this assignment. I do not quite understand the concept of the assignment. I am not sure of a topic as well. I am thinking about doing it on child obesity or homeless families, the affect it has on the children.
